Nom surtout porté dans la Loire. Désigne celui qui est originaire de Coppéré, hameau de Saint-Priest-la-Prugne (42). Variantes : Copéret, Copérey, Coppéré, Coppéret. Le sens du toponyme (Coperei en 1402) est incertain : peut-être un dérivé de coupe (= bois taillis) ou de copa (ancienne mesure agraire, terme employé dans le Lyonnais).
